It was meant to be the greatest and largest temple of ancient times and its construction started in 6th century BC but was completed in 2nd century AD under the reign of the Roman emperor Handrian.
Plaka’s and Monastiraki’s Flea Market
After the Temple of Zeus we are travelling later through the years, meeting the area of Plaka and Monastiraki’s Flea Market, one of the most famous tourists’ attraction in the city. Driving through the city , we are getting to know not only the Ancient part of the city but also the part that symbolizes the rebirth of the Greek State after the Turkish Occupation. Therefore, we are visiting three very important buildings in the heart of the city.
We are starting with the Academy of Athens, the highest educational establishment of the country, since 1926. the building was designed by Theophil Hansen under the supervision of the very well-known German architect Ernst Ziller. Right next to the Athenian Academy, there is the National Library of Greece, founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first prime minister of Greece. The trilogy of these neo-clasical gems in the centre of Athens concludes with the Athenian and Capodistrian University, founded in 1837 and designed by the Danish architect Christian Hansen.
Our Athens half day tour ends with our visit to Lycabettus Hill from which we can have an amazing panorama to the whole city from Penteli Mountain through the Saronic Gulf.
At the end of the tour, we will have the opportunity to dine in a traditional Greek taverna in Microlimano area, near Pireus.
